YOU SHOULDN’T HAVE COME HERE: REVIEW – JENEVA ROSE’S TWISTY PSYCHOLOGICAL THRILLER

Geneva Rose has developed a reputation for twist-filled psychological thrillers, and You Shouldn't Have Come Here shows exactly why. Filled with misdirection, suspense, and unexpected turns, the novel keeps readers questioning nearly every character and every assumption they make. This is my first time reading a Jeneva Rose book, and it was definitely a wild ride.  From the very beginning, Rose hooks the reader through a fast-paced story that constantly changes and throws the reader for a loop.

The Story is about Grace and Calvin.  Grace is a woman from the big city who randomly selected a vacation destination, which winds up being in a desolate area of rural Wyoming.  She books an Airbnb which is owned by her host Calvin.  As she stays at Calvin’s home, they develop a relationship which creates drama with the locals.  Calvin’s assistant, Charlotte, is immediately threatened by Grace, as Charlotte is seeking a relationship with Calvin as well.  Betty is a mother figure to Calvin and believes that Grace is not cut out for living in the country.  Other characters, Calvin’s drunk brother, the local police officers, and the town doctor help move the story along and keep the reader informed as to Calvin.

The story has a romantic aspect to it as the characters develop an attraction to each other and continuously flirt with each other throughout the novel.  This is a pretty common thriller formula; a basic “fish out of water” situation where a city girl is being scrutinized by the local folks.  But things begin to change and nothing is as it appears to be.

As red flags about Calvin start to appear, he easily diffuses the situation with his midwestern charm and good looks.  After all, he is handsome and a charming young man that is looking to make a couple bucks by hosting his home to strangers interested in visiting the middle of nowhere. 

One criticism of this book is that there is not a lot of action, as everything  takes place in the small town or on Calvin’s ranch; however, Rose does a brilliant job at creating suspense that keeps you hooked throughout the story.  The novel combines mystery, romance and psychological tension to keep the pages turning. 

The entire book keeps the reader uncomfortable and on edge.  As each character speaks, we learn more and more about Grace and Calvin that we did not know before, thus continuously changing the perception of both lead characters – in both good and bad ways.  Even the setting of the story is a setting of peril as Grace’s car breaks down and she is often without cell phone service in this rural location.  Also, Calvin lives on the edge of the woods, which creates a beautiful setting for fishing and romantic dinners under the stars.  Unfortunately, it also creates eminent danger as the woods are mysterious and is the home to several predators.  Like a classic noir film, Rose uses  isolation as a tool to make Grace appear helpless and alone in this rural Wyoming town.  But looks can be deceiving.

Ultimately, the reader questions nearly every interaction and every detail. The unease develops gradually, creating a slow-burning tension that becomes increasingly difficult to ignore. Rose demonstrates a strong understanding of psychological suspense by allowing anxiety to build naturally rather than relying solely on shocking events. 

Rose demonstrates that she has a powerful ability to manipulate the reader’s expectations.  Every red flag raised by Calvin and every new twist in the storyline  changes the reader’s expectations and keeps them guessing until the very end.

Overall – This was a fun read.  It is a fast-paced book that keeps you hooked to the very end.  Lots of twists and turns.  I will definitely look at some of her earlier books.

TF’s NOTES: – Jeneva Rose writes each chapter from the viewpoint of either Grace or Calvin. This was very innovative as you live the story through the eyes of each character.  As we get to the end, however, we feel sucker-punched and cheated as the final set of twists and turns took us by surprise.  But after thinking about it, this is exactly what Rose wanted to achieve.  Although you know the character throughout the story, even you were shocked that the characters were not what you believed they were.  Absolutely brilliant.
